GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONGKONG. 9th. March, 1914.
DD
I have the honour to inform you that in June last the Governor of Victoria asked for the loan of the services of a Chinese Interpreter in connection with a conspiracy case of some importance pending in the Court of Justice in Melbourne, Rex versus Spargo and others.
2.
The case, which had been carefully investigated in Hongkong by Hr. F. V. Gabriel of the Department of External Affairs under the Commonwealth Government, related to the illicit smugling of Chinese into Australia, and as it was very desirable to give all the assistance possible to secure a conviction, I allow- -ed ur. Wong Tak Kwong, I terpreter in the Supreme Court, to proceed to Melbourne for the purpose. He was absent from the 12th. July, 1913, until the 6th. January, 1914, and his expenses were defrayed by the Commonwealth Government.
During the absence of Mr. Tong Tak Kwong n considerable amount of work had to be performed out of office hours by the other two Interpreters, Mr. Wong Kwong-tin and Dr. A. J. Lackie, and I recomend that the, should each receive a bonus of $200 for this overtime. These suns are covered by r. Wong's lapsing | salary.

I enclose copy of a letter addressed by the Secretary for the Department of External Affairs in Lelbourne to
